The Price and Perks of Being Un-Anonymous: An Update
November 15, 2009It was amusing to read the comments that I got in my message box. Some were good and
constructive feedback, and some were laced with a touch of vitriol. Someone in the message box gave a pretty good sugesstion on what to discuss next, so I think I’ll take that on.
My last entry was about my quest to become un-anonymous. I discussed the way I want to achieve fame and what kind of fame that I wanted to have in my life. This time, I’ll discuss about some of the benefits and setbacks of achieving the kind of fame that people like me aspire to have.
Fame, as everyone knows, has its perks. People get street cred, special treatment and even material success depending on the kind of fame that one gains. When an ordinary person comes into the spotlight, it is unavoidable that others will pay more attention and maybe even put this person in a pedestal. You also get to use fame not only for yourself, but also for inspiring people to pursue their own path of fame. In short, you’re also a role model.
However, fame does have a price attached with it. People who want it in their lives should be smart and responsible enough on how to handle the type of fame that they want. Since people pay extra attention to you, expectations are higher. You have to be prepared to hear and read critcism and violent reactions for people are prone to judgement, especially to their peers. Individuals who want to be famous should also do their best to remain humble and grounded no matter what heights they reach in their climb to success. From what I have seen and experienced with people who had their brush with fame, it is indeed easier said than done.
Nevertheless, I’d like to take the challenge of fame despite of its pros and cons. I believe that it is always better to pursue what the heart desires rather than just stay in one corner and not pursue what I want.
